The data is stored in a binary format in the disks.. The disks are made of plastic coated with a thin sheet of metal. The metal sheet is where data is stored. There are two major categories of disks; permanent data storage normally referred to ROM (Read Only Memory) and editable data storage referred to as RW (Re-Writable).
The good thing with optical disks is that they are long lasting, they can store a lot of data in one disk, and the data is easily retrievable. The disadvantages that come with optical disks is that they are very delicate and the information stored can easily be distorted.
